Dear Parents and Carers,
Whilst life is ticking away in Canberra as normal, we are painfully aware of the declining situation in Sydney, 250km up the Hume Highway. We are hopeful that we do not have an outbreak of COVID here. I want to assure you that if we do go into lockdown, we will be in a position to move to Remote Learning very quickly. We did it well last year and we are confident we will do it well again, should the need arise.
The model of Remote Learning would mean that the platforms of Seesaw and Microsoft Teams will be the way we connect school with home. For this to happen effectively we need to know if there are students who will require a device to be borrowed from school so that they can access Remote Learning. I ask that you complete the following survey for each child you have attending St Thomas the Apostle School. It would be appreciated if this could be done by tomorrow afternoon, Friday 30 July.
As I said last week, we will continue with good hand hygiene across the school and will be cleaning surfaces and touch points regularly. If you child is unwell with cold or flu like symptoms, please do not send them to school as you will receive a phone call and be asked to take them home. It is imperative that we have a healthy environment at school, and we know you will understand and respect this decision for the good of all.
On a lighter note, tomorrow is our Athletics Carnival. It is going to be crisp start to the day with subzero temperatures so please ensure your child has adequate warm clothing to be outside. It’s looking to be a sunny day so hopefully some warmth will come with that. I hope that many of our parents, carers and extended family can come along at some stage. Thank you to Matt Lowe for his organisation of the carnival.
I hope you are enjoying the Olympic Games that are happening in Japan at the moment. They are certainly a positive highlight in the news, and instead of hearing about the number of COVID-19 cases climbing, we are counting the accumulation of medals that our talented Australian athletes are accruing. We have some amazing talent there in Tokyo! I wonder if any of our budding athletes who will be trying their best at Kambah Oval tomorrow, will be competing at the Olympics in Brisbane in 2032. Just maybe….

On Monday, our Gospel reading told of how Jesus met a woman at the well in Samaria. In the bible, the well is a place people gather. This is representative of God wanting to draw us into close relationship with Him. Jesus tells the woman that she only has to ask and he will give her the water of eternal life. In the same way, we need only ask, and Jesus will offer each of us the spiritual nourishment we need to live a full and satisfying life. The life-giving water of Jesus bubbles up from His deep love for us. In receiving this love, we have enough love to share with all people. This is how we make the world a more accepting and compassionate place.

Athletics Carnival
Our Athletics Carnival is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday 30 July. Thankyou to those parents who have given consent via Compass.
There are still a few families who need to complete the consent in order for their child to attend tomorrow. This needs to be done ASAP. If your child is unable to attend for any reason, there is an option to decline the event. Do not decline the event if your child simply is not keen or able to run on the day.
See below for a run sheet of the carnival's events with an estimated start time for some of the events. It is very difficult to gauge how long some events will take and thus use it as a guide only.
Please ensure your child comes in their sports uniform, with labelled clothing (a t-shirt in their house colour can be worn also). It will be a cool start, so tracksuit pants and jumpers will be necessary. It would be advisable to bring a hat as we will be outside in the sun all day. A drink bottle, recess, and lunch should also be brought along as there will be no canteen orders on the day.
If your child requires a puffer, please remind them to keep it in their school bag for the day. All other medications will be brought over from school and kept at the recorders table for the duration of the carnival.
Oz-tag Gala day reschedule dates

A reminder that in the colder weather you are welcome to come into the library before school and read with your child. It is certainly the best place to be on a frosty morning!
This week in Library lessons from Years 1-6, we explored the Catholic Social Teaching on Common Good. The Common Good challenges us to live out the responsibility we have to care for all people. It requires us to put the good of others at the centre of our lives. We must advocate for a just society in which all people, particularly the vulnerable and marginalised, are able to flourish and have their needs met.
In Years 1 and 2, we discussed that upholding the Common Good requires us to share God’s love with everyone we meet. We need to think about others, not just ourselves and to live lives of simplicity and gratitude. We viewed the following clip you may like to watch together.
In Years 3-6, we watched a TED Talk given by an incredible young man. The conversations around this clip were rich and authentic. The students were collectively inspired by William’s dreams and determination. You may like to watch it together here
