Dear Parents and Carers,
Our implementation of “Catalyst” continues to be going well with two areas of the English Curriculum, Writing and Spelling, coming into focus from this term. Members of the Leadership Team are doing an online course each Friday morning (an early start at 7:30 am) called “The Writing Revolution”. This is based on the Hochman method of teaching writing and enables students to master the skills that are essential if they are to become competent writers. In turn, those skills equip students to become better readers, to communicate more effectively in writing and speaking, and most importantly, to elevate their thinking. We started learning about “The Writing Revolution” at the beginning of the year at our pupil free day, and all teachers have the book on “The Writing Revolution” to support their learning. During our staff meetings each week, the Leadership team are working with classroom teachers to develop their skills and know-how to implement this method.
Kinder to Year 2 are continuing their learning with Sounds Write and this week Year 3 to 6 have begun intensive lessons using Spelling Mastery. This involves an explicit spelling instruction lesson 4 days a week with 8 groups running across the upper primary. I even get to share a group with Susan Chant which I am enjoying immensely, after all, I am a teacher first and foremost.
All classes from Kinder to Year 6 are building their capacity with the High Impact Teaching Practice of Daily Review.
As you can see our classrooms are busy places of learning.
Finally, we are encouraging good hygiene practices across the school and request that you continue to follow ACT Health advice regarding the current situation with COVID. I remind you that if your child has any COVID Symptoms please do not send them to school. Let’s hope that we continue to be COVID free in the ACT.
Yours in partnership

RE Week 2 - Who do you say I am?
In Community Prayer on Monday and in Library, we explored the importance of respecting the Human Dignity of all people. We understand that it is important to protect the Human Dignity of people who are living in poverty and in situations where their human rights are not being upheld. It is, however, equally important that we protect the dignity of all people. We can protect people’s dignity at school by; respecting their views, celebrating their successes and being understanding about their mistakes, including everyone, recognising that we all have different gifts, talents and hobbies and appreciating that we all look, dress and speak differently. Protecting human dignity is particularly important in online interactions.
Eucharist Preparation
Students in Year 4 are currently preparing to receive that sacrament of Holy Communion. This is a very special time for them and we continue to hold them and their families in our prayers.
Student Volunteers Needed
Pope Francis has decided to institute a Church-wide celebration of a World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. Starting this year, it will be held on the fourth Sunday of July, close to the liturgical memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus.
The Pope said the elderly, “remind us that old age is a gift and that grandparents are the link between the different generation, to pass on to the young the experience of life.”
Our Parish will be celebrating grandparents this Sunday 21st July at 10am. We would like some children to come along to the Mass and help to greet the grandparents and to serve Morning Tea following Mass.
If your family would like to be a part of this special occasion, please email Ms Vanzwol on Penelope.vanzwol@cg.catholic.edu.au before Friday at 3:30
Kambah Youth Group
St Thomas the Apostle Parish is running a Youth Alpha open for anyone from years 6 to 12!
Alpha is a video series that explores and asks big questions about your faith and world. Alpha aims to create a space where youth are able to wrestle with their big questions and have those conversations.
A normal Alpha night will look very similar to this, meet either over some food or a game. Afterwards moving into the night's talk/video, with each episode opening up a different topic of the Christian faith. Throughout and after the video we'll have time to talk in a small group/guided discussion, allowing you to really think, question and learn about these topics.
The next topic is Jesus: Who is he? Jesus Christ is the most famous person in history and there’s evidence to suggest Jesus was more than a great religious teacher. His life, death and resurrection is the centrepiece of the Christian faith. The resurrection not only suggests that God exists, but also that God has revealed himself through Jesus.
The Youth alpha will be in the Parish Centre (37 Boddington Cres, Kambah), next to the Church, from 3.30 - 5 pm on,

REC
Thank you to the families who consistently return books each week. This allows the books to be borrowed by other children who are keen to read them. On a random Thursday this term, I am going to print the records and anyone across the school who has no overdue library books will receive a special something!

Also please ensure that you use the Compass Sign in station at the front office if you are dropping off students late or collecting them early.
