Dear Parents and Carers,
It’s certainly been a busy week here with the completion on NAPLAN assessments, our Prayer Night for the children preparing for their Reconciliation (the sacrament of Penance) and our Open Day yesterday. As the principal of our beautiful school, I was so proud of the way our Year 6 students conducted tours of the school to prospective parents and students. They were polite to our visitors and ever so enthusiastic in the way they talked about their school. They answered the questions posed to them in far more depth than any staff member could as they gave their student perspective which the parents appreciated. Our enrolment period continues until 28 May. If you have a child ready for Kindergarten in 2022, please ensure that you have enrolled them online by the end of this period. If you have friends or family in the area interested in sending their children to St Thomas’ in 2022, please let them know about our Open Morning on Saturday 22 May from 9:00am until 11:00am. We also welcome people booking tours at other times, just call Naomi in the office to book a time.
Compass
The uptake of parents and carers using the app is slowly increasing. It is imperative that everyone has logged on to the Parent Portal by 18 June. Student reports will be available from this date and can only be accessed through the Parent Portal. They will not be printed and sent home.
Winter Uniform
Thank you to those parents and carers who are ensuring their children are wearing the correct school uniform. The winter uniform for terms 2 and 3 is long pants and not shorts. It is acceptable to wear shorts under tracksuit pants on Sport days as children can get hot even on the coldest day if they are exerting a lot of energy playing sport. Scarves, coats, beanies and gloves are most welcome to be worn but please remember that these items should be navy or royal blue.
School Fees
A reminder that school fees for term 2 are due to be finalised tomorrow, Friday 21 May. Payment of these fees can be made by Qkr, cash, cheque, credit card, EFTPOS, BPay or Direct Debit. A reminder also that if at any time you experience difficulty in meeting your commitment in relation to fees, please do not hesitate to come and speak with me. Fee Remission application papers are available from Naomi, our Finance Manager in the Front Office.
Pie and Footy Night
We are holding an adult only "Pie and Footy" night for the first State of Origin night on Wednesday 7 June. We are hoping for a great turn out of dads and granddads (mums and grandmothers welcome too). Cameron Maher (father of Harry Maher) will be bringing along his Kombi Keg where drinks can be purchased (beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks) and the Community Council will be supplying piping hot gourmet pies. It gets better…. It will be in the school grounds where we will set up multiple fire pits for warmth and the Kombi Keg not only will have drinks for sale but also has a 55-inch TV on the top for the all-important viewing of the game. All you need to bring is a comfortable chair to sit in, and your winter woollies. It should be a great night of entertainment. There will be an electronic form sent home next week to ask who will be coming. That way we will have enough pies for everyone. If anyone has a portable fire pit that we can borrow for the night, that would be much appreciated.
Yours in partnership,
Ursula Jamieson

Recess vs Lunch Orders
There seem to be a bit of confusion in regards to ordering snacks and lunches, so I will try to make it clearer.
Order everything as ‘lunch’ (this is the only option anyway):
- Snacks, frozen items and drinks will always be ready at recess time for your child to pick up and they will have to come to the canteen to get it.
- I will then cross it off their order, and they will get the remaining items in their lunch order baskets, which is being brought to class.
- If they don’t pick it up at recess time, it will still get to them, but it just means they might have a lot of food at lunchtime.
The reason for this is that it saves printing, stickers, bags and going back and forth with lunch baskets. Also, Flexischools will charge you the order fee for every separate order, so it makes sense to order it all in one go.
If you have any questions, please ask!
Large Denominations
It is unfortunately becoming more and more often, that a child comes to the canteen with large notes. I would really appreciate if we can try to avoid this, for a couple of reasons:
- It leaves your child with a large amount of change, which there is a high risk of them loosing it.
- It will present a temptation for other children to help themselves to some of this money.
- I do not have a lot of change, so when a child comes with a $20 note to buy a $0.50 item, it clears me out.
- No counter item cost more than $2.50, so there is no need to give your child a large amount of cash.
Thank you
Kind Regards

Yr 5/6 Excursion Museum of Australian Democracy and the Australian Electoral Commission
As a great introduction to the Inquiry Unit 'Society is shaped through systems of governance', Year 5/6 visited the Australian Museum of Democracy, to learn a little about the background of Australians three tiers of Government. A special focus was on the Rights of Children, and completing group activities focus on a number of articles from the UNICEF charter, about the rights of children. They also spent some time at the Australian Electoral Commission and even participated in a 'Mock Referendum'. The teachers would like to extend their sincere thanks to the parents and caregivers who attended to assist and participate on the day.
