Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you to the many families who came last Sunday and worked hard for the morning (and into the afternoon) at our annual Working Bee. It was an incredibly productive day. Mums, dads, grandparents and carers turned up with their tools and gardening equipment and transformed the gardens with weeding, pruning and planting. The old fencing around the Kindergarten playground was replaced with new pool fencing. The shipping container that houses the Imagination and Creation Station was cleaned out ready for new resources and equipment to be placed in there. There were many other jobs carried out and our groundsman John Cousins couldn’t have been happier. The day finished up with some cold drinks and a pizza lunch. Thank you to those fantastic people who were able to come along. The morning was a true testament to the vibrant and dedicated community minded people we have at this great school of St Thomas the Apostle.
Compass App
From the beginning of next term, we will cease using the Szapp app and will be communicating via the Compass App. This will be for us to send notifications to you and also for you to use for absentee correspondence. Many parents and carers have already been using it and from all reports it is a user friendlier app. For more information please click on the following links.
The Fete is happening for 2021
I am so pleased to say that we can hold our annual fete this year. We have many of our team from 2019 stepping up again but we are also looking for some new volunteers to be part of the fete team. There are many roles that we need people for. It is a real community event and all those who have been part of the fete committee in the past, though exhausted at the end of fete day, always say that it has been a rewarding and friendship building experience. There will be a meeting to kick things off for 2021, on Tuesday evening, April 27th. It will be in the school staff room from 6pm until 7pm. Some former members whose children have now left the school will be coming along to the meeting to give a quick rundown of what they have done in the past and to give a handover of their role to their successor. Even if you’re not sure what it’s all about or don’t know if you’re ready to commit, please come along and hear all about it. It is a great way to play an active part of this great community.
Canteen Reopening
We are very excited to see the canteen reopening from Wednesday of Week 1. A notification will come out before the Term 2 begins with details of the new menu and resuming of Flexischools for online ordering.
ANZAC Day Ceremony
We will be holding an ANZAC day ceremony at 9:30am on Friday April 23rd. It will be held outside so that parents, carers and relatives can attend. If any of our family members are in the services or were formally, we invite you to attend and to be part of this ceremony. Please let us know of your willingness to be involved by filling in this online form.
Friendship Fridays
Friendship Fridays will begin in Week 1 of Term 2. It will be from 9:15am (after Community Prayer) until 10:30am and will be an opportunity for our adult school community members along with our bubs and pre-schoolers to come together for a chat, a cuppa and some activities for the little ones. This will be held in the back of the library. Those attending will be required to sign in at the front office and also through the Check in Canberra App.
Enrolments for 2022
Enrolment time will be here again early in Term 2 (May 2 until May 28). If you have a little one ready for school in 2022 or you know of anyone interested in enrolling at St Thomas the Apostle, our open days are on Wednesday May 19th from 9am until 5pm and on Saturday morning May 22nd from 9am until 11am.
We look forward to seeing all our students back on Tuesday April 20th, dressed in the winter uniform. A description of what constitutes the uniform can be found on the school website. Please click this link for further details.
Thank you to all your kind contributions for the Easter Egg raffle. Our community raised $800 for Caritas.
I hope all of our families have a faith filled Easter time along with a refreshing break over the school holidays.
Yours in partnership,
Ursula Jamieson
Principal
RE Week 9 - Who do you say I am?
Today the students and teachers engaged with the events of Holy Week. Led by the Youth Ministry team, we were given the opportunity to reflect on the meaning and impact of this special time and to consider what this means for us in our current social context.
Our Youth Ministry Team will continue to support their peers by leading Community Prayer, reading and altar serving at Mass and working with teachers to run mini retreats and reflections. We hope to extend their influence into the Parish in the form of Youth Masses and perhaps, into the future, a youth group.
My prayer for you is that you take time this Easter to nurture your sense of hope. For Christians, hope comes from the knowledge that God loves each of us with a love that is beyond our understanding. This hope encourages us to accept each day as a gift. It allows us to look on the world with the eyes of compassion. It strengthens us to continue despite our personal and global challenges. It assures us that we are never alone. Hope leads us closer each day to God’s promise of eternal life with Him.
Friendship Fridays
Friendship Friday is a renewed initiative to embrace and develop the sense of community which forms the heart of St Thomas the Apostle school.
The initiative aims to;
- Encourage new friendships
- Develop positive, supportive networks
- Provide a space for siblings to meet and play
- Provide activities for young children to engage with
- Engage with some charitable works such as craft or cooking activities for members of our school and Parish community. (No skill required!)
We encourage you to come and join us on a weekly basis or as often as you choose. A balance of adults with young children and adults with only school-aged children would be wonderful. It is really important that everyone feels welcome. Those with children in upper grades would provide positive support to those new to our community while those new to the community could develop friendships that have the potential to span many years.
We will begin in Term 2 Week 1 with a general meet and greet and discussion on what the initiative looks like. Activities for following weeks may include; cooking for the community pantry, making some muffins/biscuits for families in need/parishioners, making cards, doing some gardening, book sharing and walking.
We hope to see this initiative well supported by our wonderful community.
Have a blessed and joyful Easter!

Happy Birthday to the following students and staff who will celebrate a birthday this week and in the holidays.
Congratulations to the following students for their achievements in sport recently.
Dean McIntyre and Felix Walker were selected by the Tuggeranong Buffaloes Junior Rugby League Football club to compete at GIO Stadium in the half time relay race during the Raiders vs Warriors game. Felix ran for the under 7s and Dean ran for the under 8s. The boys had to run from one try line to the other, 100m. They had such a great time and ran as hard as they could. The Buffaloes club came 4th in the race.
Rafael Regala and Artie Lipton have both finished Round 2 of U12 Southern Junior Basketball League at Wodonga, Victoria last weekend. Their team are 4th place in the ladder and will progress to Round 3 in May 2021 at Wollongong NSW.
