Thank you to the parents who were instrumental in the success of our involvement at the Catholic Netball Carnival last Saturday. It was a very busy day for them as they covered many roles including coaching teams, managing teams, supervision of children and some doing all three! Many of these parents are backing up again on Friday for the Boorowa Netball and Touch Football Carnival. Our community is blessed to have your support and commitment.
We’re only two weeks away from our big fete day. The committee members are in overdrive organising all the stalls and events happening at the fete. They are still hoping (and needing) more volunteers for the day. Even just one hour will be very much appreciated.
We had some very exciting news this week with Leyrizza Leyes announcing her engagement. I’m sure you will join me in congratulating Leyrizza and Khae Sae, her fiancé on this wonderful news.
May God bless you and your families

Dr Waters talks about finding a way to shine a light on children’s strengths, a way of shifting attention from weaknesses to strengths and when seeing the strengths in others asking “I wonder what underlying strength is motivating them to do that?”
This is much easier when we feel calm as parents, but it is much more difficult when we feel stressed. The author talks about a strategy she developed to “short-circuit my negative defaults in real-time, real-life situations with my kids. I needed a mental trick to redirect my selective attention to strengths.” She developed the Strength Switch to focus on what her children had done right before looking at the negative.
She literally visualises a switch to short-circuit the negative default mode to a strength mode. By 1) taking a couple of deep breaths and 2) inserting a thought: The strengths are here, but they’re hiding. Let me switch over to find them.
Some of the tips given in getting started are:
- Start with low stake situations. Begin using it in when you are feeling energised and feeling good about life.
- Progress to using the Strength Switch on those small issues that turn could turn into big arguments.
- When you feel your negative thoughts start to cascade, STOP and notice how you feel, e.g. annoyed, angry, disappointed and try not to attach to that feeling.
- Select a strength. Ask yourself “What strength does my child have that could help her handle this differently? How would it change what I think about this? What strength do I have that could help me handle this situation differently?
- Visualise the switch and tell yourself: “Flick the Switch”.
- Speak to your child’s strengths. When you see a strength, all it. Remembering where your attention is the energy flows.
With small steps and hope behaviour and our response to it can change.
Next week: Lea Waters exercise to notice a strength

Catholic Schools Netball Carnival
Last weekend students participated in the final Catholic Schools Netball Carnival. St Thomas had a 3/4 and a 5/6 team participate. Both teams played extremely well and did a fantastic job representing our school. Big thanks to those parents who helped out on the day, especially our team coaches Clare and Virginia.
Ride Safely to School Week
Next week (Week 3) is Ride Safely to School week. With the weather warming up, we are trying to encourage as many students as we can to ride their bikes (or walk) next week. Making a habit of riding/walking to school, even once a week, can improve health and wellbeing.
If you haven’t yet registered your child(ren) for the upcoming swimming program, please do so before Monday 28 October. Please make sure that you use the class specific code when signing up your child(ren).
Reminder that the Boorowa Bus leaves at 6:15am tomorrow. Please be on time and please pack plenty (at least 4 bottles) of water because tap water in Boorowa cannot be drunk and the canteen will have a limited supply. If any parents are planning on coming along we are still desperate for some parents to help out with touch football refereeing. The rules are modified and easy to follow so no need to be a professional. Any help for any amount of time would be greatly appreciated.
