Dear Parents and Carers,
We shared the day with our grandparents, where students invited their grandparents to join them in their classrooms before we all went to the church for a beautiful Mass. The church was packed and for a while, we didn’t think we were all going to be able to fit.
It was beautiful to see the strong bond between the generations, as grandparents and special people in their lives, shared the morning with us and the children showed their appreciation and love towards their grandparents. We would like to express our gratitude to all the grandparents and special people who attended the event and shared their wisdom and love with our students.
Sharing the day with ‘Harmony Day’, our students had the opportunity to celebrate the diversity of our St Thomas the Apostle families. Many dressed up in traditional clothing and shared their favourite cultural foods during morning tea.
We hope that this event has inspired our students to continue learning about different cultures and embracing diversity. We believe that by celebrating our differences, we can create a more harmonious and inclusive community.
NAPLAN
Over the past two weeks, our Year 3 and Year 5 students completed the NAPLAN tests for this year. These tests are just one aspect of our students' academic journey. Our teachers work tirelessly throughout the year to provide a well-rounded education for our students, which includes developing their social, emotional, and creative skills alongside their academic abilities.
Sharing Best Practice
This coming weekend, Monique George, Lauren Jameson, and myself will be travelling to Geelong to present at a conference about our journey with the Catalyst over the past three years.
The Catalyst Project has been an important initiative in our school that has focused on establishing High Impact Teaching Practices (HITP) across the school and embedding Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) in the delivery of our many of our lessons.
At the conference in Geelong, we will be sharing our experiences with other educators and school leaders, showcasing our journey and the positive impact of Catalyst in our school. We hope that our presentation will inspire others to consider HITP and EDI in their own school communities.
Pupil Free Day
A reminder that there is a pupil free day on Monday 24 April. The first day back of Term 2 will be Wednesday, 26 April 2022 (day after Anzac day).
May God bless you and your families.

There are 3 ways for the children to return their library books each week:
- Place books in the green trolley by the stage on your borrowing day- we are trying to get as many books returned in the morning as we can
- Bring your books to your library lesson and return to Mrs Rootes
- Return books in the returns trolley in the library any day of the week
If you miss your borrowing day, the library is open every Tuesday lunchtime, so children are very welcome to borrow at this time.

Looking back - Multicultural Day
It is always wonderful to see photos from past days at St Thomas the Apostle Primary School. Thank you to Veda Stewart's mum, Ana, for sharing the following photos from Multicultural Day in the early 1980s. Veda's aunt is wearing her Croatian national dress in the photos. Ana is also wearing the dress in a photo when she was a student at St Thomas. Veda wore the same dress on Harmony Day on Monday and her aunt was able to join us on Monday too.

Congratulations to Georgia Penny who played netball for the Arawang U11 representative team at Young on the weekend. Congratulations to other students who competed for Arawang on the weekend. It was 38 degrees!
Last weekend some St Thomas children braved the hot conditions to compete in the Little Athletics ACT U9-U13 State Championships at Woden Athletics Park. It was wonderful to see the children support each other and celebrate the following achievements.
- Vincent McInerney came 5th in his heat and 11th overall in the Under 10 70-metre sprint.
- Vinh Ngo came 3rd in the Under 11 Shotput.
- Isaac Johnson came 1st in the Under 11 Triple jump, 2nd in the 100-metre sprint, 2nd in the High jump, and 3rd in the Long jump.
- Flynn Johnson came 1st in the Under 9 High jump.
- Hudson Wundersitz came 3rd in the Under 11 High jump.
Also, a big shout out to Barb Miels-Barrett for all that she does for Tuggeranong Little Athletics and her amazing organisational skills in the lead up to this competition.
