Dear Parents and Carers,
What a successful school swimming carnival we had yesterday! It was so good to see all our students participating in their chosen events with such effort and enthusiasm. At St Thomas the Apostle, we always ask our students to try their best in every endeavour they undertake, and our swimming carnival was no exception. I had many conversations with students who were very nervous to participate in their chosen events. They did so regardless, and were very proud of their personal achievements as a result. I must thank our coordinator, Mr Mooney, for his brilliant planning and execution of the carnival. Without his forward thinking and attention to detail, the day would not have been as successful as it was. Matt O’Dwyer, a parent at our school, worked behind the scenes with Mr Mooney, giving his time and resources to plan for the carnival also. Thank you Matt! There were many parent volunteers who took time out of their day to assist and again, I am very thankful for their time and efforts.
On Monday, St Thomas the Apostle will welcome Dr Lorraine Hammond who will be working with our teachers to strengthen and support their teaching and learning in the Science of Reading and High Impact Teaching Practices. We always look forward to welcoming Dr Hammond for the guidance she gives to our teachers and leadership team.
Next Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday. We will be attending Mass together as a school community at 9:30am. All parents and carers are welcome to attend.
Yours in Christ,

RE Week 3 - "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6)
Thank you to 2B who led us in Community Prayer today in the church. Today’s reading came from the Gospel of John, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through me”. During the holidays, artist Wendy Rix created this beautiful mural entitled, “I am the way”.
Key features of her artwork are:
- The school crest is a cross and a bible which feature in the painting.
- The meeting place has 12 people around it - the Apostles with Jesus represented by the cross.
- Jesus is also the vine and people are the branches. They are painted in the School House colours.
- Cracked mud along this journey represents Wendy’s connection to country plus everyone’s connection to the grounds the school is on.
- The School House mascots appear as footprints (kookaburra, kangaroo, koala and emu).
We are so blessed to have this incredible work of art as a visual reminder of Jesus being the Way, the Truth and the Life.
****A reminder that Community Prayer will be held in the Church at 2:30 pm every odd week of the term and all families are invited to join us. ****
Please mark in your diaries:
Wednesday 22 February - Ash Wednesday Mass 9:30am
Friday 3 March - Community Prayer led by 3/4G 2:30pm
Sunday 5 March - Children's Liturgy followed by cupcake decorating and scones 10:00am
Monday 20 March- Grandparent's Day and Harmony Day Mass and morning tea beginning at 9:30am
Correction: This year, Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will be involved in preparing for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation. I am putting together the enrolment information packs at the moment. Please keep an eye out for them in the coming weeks. I omitted Year 4 from the newsletter last week. My apologies for any confusion this caused.
Wishing you a weekend of peace and rest,

This week in the library, all classes celebrated Library Lovers’ Day, read books about libraries and shared what we loved about our library. There were some very heartfelt answers by children who genuinely love the library, books and all the things we do here at St Thomas. The Year 5/6’s brainstormed why we borrow, books and genres they like and what books they would recommend to each other. Year 3-6 are also working on a “Every reader is awesome” display where the children illustrate a lego figure with books they love, sharing their reading styles.

Please help your child to remember to bring their books back to school in their library bag on their borrowing day as listed below:
Tuesdays: Kinder, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3/4PB
Wednesdays: Year 3/4T, 3/4G, 3/4C, 5/6KP, 5/6S, 5/6H

Hope to see you in the library soon!

This week I have enjoyed playing in the sandpit and it has become my favourite recess duty! Each day I like checking and locking the gates with my Learning Support friends. Today I enjoyed reading with 3/4PB and watching the students working in 3/4G. I had a little sleep in 3/4T while they were doing literacy and sentence construction.

Love Tommy
