Dear Parents and Carers,
We end week 6 on a high note, looking back at all the good things that have occurred this past week.
Matt Lowe and his wife Bec, along with big brother Noah, welcomed Hugo George into the world on Saturday. It was a little earlier than expected but newborn babies don’t have calendars and like to surprise their parents sometimes! We send Matt and his family our love and good wishes as they settle into life as a family of four.
Mrs Chant successful Performance Review
Mrs Susan Chant has been our Assistant Principal for almost two years (her initial position appointment contract). As part of her contract renewal, Susan recently underwent a comprehensive Performance Review. This involved a survey of staff and parents and our parish priest. I am pleased to say that Susan’s report spoke of an exceptional Assistant Principal who is respected and appreciated by the St Thomas the Apostle Community. Dominic Braybon, our Performance Improvement Leader from Catholic Education came to the school on Monday for her review interview and to go through the report with her. Congratulations to Susan on this outstanding report and a contract renewal for a further four years. We are blessed to have you as our Assistant Principal and will continue be so in the future.
Book Week events
This week we have had a fantastic time celebrating BOOK WEEK. The students were very fortunate to have a teaching session with a notable author by the name of Anna Battese. Anna spent two days in the school sharing her experiences, telling her stories and inspiring our students to become better writers. They were quite enthralled by her acting prowess and her passion for writing shone through in her presentation. Thank you to Leah Godfrey for organising having Anna with us.
Our Book Week dress up and parade was one of the best we have every had. The imagination and creation of you, our parents and carers, never ceases to amaze me. The outfits the students dressed up in were fantastic. It was a little disturbing at the start to the day with the evil Miss Trunchbull frightening everyone at assembly, but the characters the students were dressed up as softened her demeanor as the parade progressed. I hope we don’t see Miss Trunchbull for a long long time.
Teacher Training in the school holidays
In the upcoming September/ October school holidays, St Thomas the Apostle School will be hosting a three-day intensive training course for teachers. This will be on “High Impact Teaching Practices” in Literacy and Numeracy. We anticipate having up to 90 teachers from across the Archdiocese here for the three-day event. It will be in the second week of the holidays, Wednesday 5 October until Friday 7 October, 8:45am until 1pm each day.
To support the training, we are looking for students who would be interested in participating in lessons as part of this program. Please see the attached flyer that explains what it involves and gives you a link should you wish to sign you child / children up to be part of this. We are looking for students from Kinder to Year 6 and places are limited.
It is a great opportunity for both students and teachers. Please do not hesitate to contact me for more information.
Pupil free day
In Week 8, Friday 9 September will be a pupil free planning and programming day. These pupil free days are assigned for all schools in the ACT (Catholic and government). They allow teachers to catch up on time missed due to release time having been cancelled and in addition, the times teachers have had to cover for staff who have been away. We appreciate your support with these days as we navigate (and are nearly through) a winter with not only COVID but debilitating flu as well. TEAMKIDS will be providing a holiday program on the Friday. To find out more, register or book, see link below.
Fete
Things are starting to rev up in preparation for our annual (first time in three years!) fete. There are big jobs to be done but also small ones if you are limited by what you are able to commit to. You can find out more and see how you can support this event by heading to the fete Facebook page.
I get that pleasant feeling that spring is almost in the air.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone,

RE Week 6 - Our Common Home - Connecting with God
This week students explored some formal prayers that are frequently used in our community, including the Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be and Sign of the Cross. These prayers help us to communicate with God and they also remind us that we are part of a larger community. People all over the world pray these prayers every second of each day. Next time you pray one of these prayers, take a breath, appreciate the community you are a part of and join many others in these universal prayers.
