NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. The assessments are undertaken every year in the second full week in May. As a school, we have begun to prepare ourselves for the assessment – ensuring we have our systems set up for a smooth rollout. We will schedule a practice test day on Monday 28 March to ensure that students are familiar with the platform. A very big thank you to Mr. Mooney who has begun this process and will continue to work with our teachers and students in the coming months.

“We need to take up an ancient lesson, found in different religious traditions and also in the Bible. It is the conviction that ‘less is more’. A constant flood of new consumer goods can baffle the heart and prevent us from cherishing each thing and each moment. To be serenely present to each reality, however small it may be, opens us to much greater horizons of understanding and personal fulfilment. Christian spirituality proposes a growth marked by moderation and the capacity to be happy with little. It is a return to that simplicity which allows us to stop and appreciate the small things, to be grateful for the opportunities which life affords us, to be spiritually detached from what we possess, and not to succumb to sadness for what we lack.” (Pope Francis, Laudato Si)
Project Compassion
The theme of Project Compassion 2022 is ‘For All Future Generations’ and reminds us that the good that we do today will extend and impact the lives of generations to come. It invites us to make the world a better place by working together now and finding long-term solutions to global issues. We encourage you to put your compassion into action this Lent through your prayer, fasting and almsgiving by supporting Project Compassion.
A reminder that families can donate to Project Compassion by bringing money into school (students can place money in the donation box in their classroom) or through Compass Pay (please put Project Compassion as the reference).
Sacramental Enrolment
Students should have received a sacramental information booklet and enrolment form for Reconciliation (Year 3) or First Eucharist (Year 4). There are spare forms in the office if required. A reminder that students will need to bring their enrolment form and payment to any mass on the weekend of 19th and 20th March. Mass times are Saturday 6pm, Sunday 8:30am and 10am. You can pay through the office or Compass Pay before this date if you would like to.
If you are unable to attend any of these dates or have any questions, please contact Geoffrey Ryan through the school office on 6231 4144 or via email on geoffrey.ryan@cg.catholic.edu.au.
We look forward to sharing this important journey with you.
Geoff Ryan

An informative week! Each class have continued to explore non-fiction texts. It is wonderful to see the students show such interest in a range of topics and also to engage with books to learn new information.
The students have been taking more responsibility in the library. Years 1-6 are learning to return their own books, place them on the shelf and help each other to do so. We are also encouraging students to make book recommendations to their peers. Some students in younger years are showing great interest in books that perhaps are a little too challenging. If they do bring a book home that is a little tricky for them to read by themselves I have been encouraging them to ask mum, dad, older siblings or carers to read some of the book to them. In some cases I let them borrow 3 books to put into their library bag so that they still have 2 that they can explore on their own. Reading to your children as they get older will continue to foster their reading development and interest, so please try to take the opportunity if it arises.
Borrowing days for next week:
Tuesday 15th March: K-2, 3/4B
Wednesday 16th March: 3/4G, 5/6KP, 5/6B
If you have any recommendations or feedback for the library please just send me an email at leah.bayin@cg.catholic.edu.au

Happy Birthday to the following students and teacher who will celebrate a birthday this week
Edwina Wundersitz
When my Dad (a former Parents & Friends Association President) organised for the Canberra Raiders to appear at the St Thomas Fete of ’83, it was something to boast about. The effort and energy my parents put into that year’s Fete and the school generally - while wrangling four children - was enormous. I’d like to continue to play my part in this lovely school community, which dates back to my time in its inaugural kindergarten class, and give my sons Cooper (Year 6) and Hudson (Year 4), something to be proud of too.
This is my second year on the SCC and Aleks Kalinowski and I continue to enjoy our role as Class Parent Contacts.
What brings me joy? Skiing, beach holidays and outdoor adventures. Fun times with family and friends and baking with the kids. Keeping fit, watching the football and cricket, and going to the movies. And saving the best ‘til last, my husband’s cooking and my children’s laughter.
A wonderful opportunity for prospective families to see the College in action, meet our students and attend the Principal’s Address, Year 7 and 11 Information Evenings and lots more.
We are enrolling now for 2023 and beyond!
