Dear Parents and Carers,
Today (if not already) you will receive information from your child’s/children’s teacher/teachers. This will include a Term Letter with information about what they will be covering in class, a teacher bio letting you know a little bit about them and a survey for you to fill in so they can learn more about your child and also what you would like the teacher to know. Usually at this time of the year we would have a “Meet and Greet” social evening where you can meet and talk with the teachers. The information being sent by teachers will go some way to acquainting yourselves with each other, but we do look forward to having a social event once restrictions allow it. We are certainly missing that personal contact with our parents and carers.
The first two weeks of term have gone well and the teachers have focussed on setting the students up for a successful year in their respective classes. This has included the children knowing the expectations of the classroom and the playground; what healthy food choices they can make for recess and lunch, they have also covered the Protective Behaviours program. Today, Constable Kenny Koala gave a talk to the Kinder, Year 1, Year 2 and to Year 3/4B and 3/4J about ‘Staying safe in the community’. He will come back next week to finish off the Year 3/4 classes and to talk to Year 5/6 about “Staying safe online”.
School Hours and Supervision
At the beginning of each year, I am obliged to let you know the hours of school supervision. The school day begins at 8:50am and finishes at 2:50pm. These times are to accommodate COVID 19 restrictions and the earlier than usual finish is to allow students to disperse safely to pick up areas around the school at the end of the school day. Our recess break is at 11.00am (currently 30 mins) and our lunch break at 12.50pm (currently 30 mins). Supervision on the playground commences at 8.30am each morning and students should not arrive or be at school earlier than this. Students are supervised until 3:30pm in the afternoon. Any child still at school after 3:30pm will be taken to the front office. No child will ever be left unsupervised at the end of the day.
Now that we have really gotten into the swing of things, I need to bring to your attention that is so important that the students are at school on time and ready to start the day at 8:50am when the bell rings. We noticed this morning for instance, that while the morning assembly was happening, over 20 children came in through the gates. There were several more after 9am. I know that there are some circumstances such as appointments or emergencies when there is an understandable reason for students being late, however, I cannot stress enough the importance for children to feel calm and settled when the school day begins and that arriving late can be a cause of anxiety for children when they come in after the day has begun.
Have a great weekend,
Yours in partnership,
Ursula Jamieson
Principal
He says that “there is a nobility in the duty to care for creation through little daily actions, and it is wonderful how education can bring about real changes in lifestyle. Education in environmental responsibility can encourage ways of acting which directly and significantly affect the world around us, such as avoiding the use of plastic and paper, reducing water consumption, separating refuse, cooking only what can reasonably be consumed, showing care for other living beings, using public transport or car-pooling, planting trees, turning off unnecessary lights, or any number of other practices. All of these reflect a generous and worthy creativity which brings out the best in human beings.” (Laudato Si, Pope Francis).
This week we have encouraged the children to choose one thing they can do to help care for the Earth. Small things add up to make a big difference. What small actions or choices can you make to help care for our common home?
